THE BUCKET LIST CHALLENGE

Have you thought about it? The cringing years of retirement doing absolutely nothing but sitting outside the farm or in the house as you wait for dividends or NSSF, going down memory lane of the good old times and the crazy moments of being legally aged. Now your young self, right now, must be thinking, “There is no way I’ll be a couch potato.” But what if that’s what reality has planned for you?

We try to fight such concepts by buying land, and farming and keeping any domestic animals that seem profitable at the time. But what if that’s not your thing? What if Nairobi life is the only life for you?

We never seem to plan those moments, because they look far and depressing to some people, and yet when it hit us…we have the money and the time but there’s no work to keep our minds pre-occupied. In no time, we fall into some kind of depression, or what people call ‘mid-life crises’. Now I’m no expert on how people handle this without a plan. But I do know a thing or two.

The reason why this is a crucial talk is because it affects even the people around you, I’m talking about the depression you get when you realize that your “future succession plan” was a bust, the doubt of your love life and life partner, the boredom of the same old routine with the same people, the fear of the unknown (future), and worst of all the rise/increase of impulsive decision making.

One minute your wife/husband is the best thing that has happened to you, the next, you despise them, and you ‘feel the love’ no more. And you make a stupid impulse move of cheating/divorcing, then later regretting the whole move.

I honestly believe that an idle mind is the devil’s workshop. Think about it… some of these symptoms are amplified by having a lot of free time to think about how lame your life is, when it’s farfetched from the truth, or worse of, looking into other people’s life’s and comparing their success to yours. Jeeez…your success is different in terms of its extent, timeline and nature. Avoid such nonsense and appreciate how far you’ve gone for the last 3-5 years.

So what do people do in their midlife crisis? There’s a lot that you can do, why not try something new! Make a Bucket List of what you would like to do that’s within your capacity. If it’s volunteering, being a lecturer, traveling, doing a hobby you love doing and don’t forget to share this with YOUR PARTNER and FAMILY. You’re not alone in this, and once you acknowledge that you feel like your life sucks and you haven’t accomplished anything significant. Then it’s one step closer to getting your life back to normal.

Finally, don’t act irrationally or emotionally with no clarity of the truth or with negative/positive emotions that blind the truth. If you feel you’re falling short of something even in business when profits aren’t booming as they used to or your relationship isn’t heated as it used to…the FIX IT! Don’t get into a new business that you have no/little experience and leave something you’ve been doing for more than years… there’s always room for innovation.

But hey…. I would love to hear your voice on this interesting topic…keep me updated.

TRAVELLING ON A BUDGET

The holiday season is almost here, and I’m sure you plan on travelling with your loved ones, but the question is how can you travel, have fun and still save your coins? Here are some tips on how you can travel on a budget:

  1. Book in advance

If you plan on travelling by flight, train or any other means of transport, you might want to consider booking in advance. Last minute bookings will only cost you extra money.

Still on early bookings, don’t fall into the lie that insinuates that you have a whole lot of hotels to choose from. Here’s the thing, the higher the demand, the higher the prices. During the holidays as people rush to book hotel rooms, the prices will also be inflated, forcing you to take more cash out of your pocket. So, if you are planning on traveling on a budget book your hotel room in advance.

  1. Do in house cooking

While it may sound strenuous having to cook while on vacation, this could go a long way in helping you save your coins. If your accommodation offers private catering and has a kitchen, it would save you a lot to get your own groceries and prepare your own meals. This will also be helpful if you’re on a strict diet or have food allergies.

  1. Find alternative eating spots

Also, if your room doesn’t have a kitchen, you don’t have to pay for the full board package. You can pay for the bed and breakfast package and find an alternative cheaper place for lunch or dinner. Make sure you take full advantage of the all you can eat breakfast platter though!

  1. Share the costs

Last but not least, the more the merrier. It doesn’t hurt to ask a couple of friends or family members to tag along. You’ll not only have more fun but you will also get to share costs, reducing the financial burden you would have had to carry if you were travelling alone. Additionally, look out for travel and booking packages that have special prices for people travelling as a group.

SELF LOVE

When asked to define who we are, most people talk about their career, status and physical appearance. However, not much thought is put into describing our inner being. And self-love is an essential part of this.

Self-love is having a deep understanding of who you are and accepting oneself, flaws and all. It is about knowing your values and your boundaries and honoring them. It helps you with your interpersonal relations because people choose how to react and treat you based on how you treat yourself.

So why is it important to practice self-love?

  1. It provides you with an inner happiness, confidence and peace of mind that is not easily influenced or swayed by external events and opinions.
  2. It enables you to make healthier choices in all areas of your life from your intimate relationships to your finances.
  3. It boosts confidence in self, allowing you to celebrate other people’s wins without envy.

In a nutshell, self-love is a prerequisite to loving others. Your relationships are only as strong as the foundation of your self-love. Drop any belief you may hold that loving yourself is selfish or egotistical and replace it with the truth that loving yourself is an integral part and requirement of your life.

Fashion & Travel

Most times people make the mistake of choosing their Sunday-best- wear while travelling, that is one of the biggest fashion fails I have noted a couple of times at boarding stations. First, comfort is the most important thing while you are travelling, may it be a safari or a flight. Another thing is mobility, your ability to move, how uncomfortable is a pair of tight jeans on a ten –hour flight?

Well, I know I don’t want to be that fashion fail who’s looking like they are going for a meeting instead of a journey. All you need to do is pack up the right kind of clothes and dress appropriately for your travel, here are some ideas I have put together for you.

Best way to dress for a flight have yourself a pair of jeggings/tights/sweat pants paired with a simple tee and sneakers/rubber shoes. Simple, you won’t be as tired on the flight as you would have tight clothes made of heavy material on. Very trendy and stylish as well. Another big plus, is you will not have to keep removing articles of your wear at security checks.

Another tip, avoid unnecessary jewelry while taking flights, unless it’s a private jet, well you know, you have to pass through customs and you will be required to remove all those pieces of metal you’ll have on. Not so cool having to remove your navel ring in public ha-ha (sounded funny as I was typing). The point is to keep it simple and stylish. Minimal make up is also advised, you don’t want your mascara running now, do you? It’s established that best way is to keep it simple while taking a flight, saves a lot of time and you keep your comfort.

Onto another fashion and travel tip; Game Safari. Nothing is as comfortable as going on Safari with perfect gear. We are talking sports bras, tees, tights and a pair of nice boots. The best way to interact with nature is by first being comfortable in your most immediate environment which is the clothing you wear. There is no best way to describe travel like a bush Safari. The benefit of being in comfortable wear is being able to freely move around, climb on the rocks get to see far and wide and let’s not forget having the right kind of equipment to capture the memories; we are talking cameras, a pair of binoculars and any other preferable gear you deem best for your Safari.

Haven’t I been stating the obvious already? So let’s share some of that Safari fashion sense, this is just a list of things that are a must have for you to have a comfortable Safari and an enjoyable one for that matter.

Anti-glare sunglasses; assuming the sun is up high and burning. This will help you retain visual and also protect your eyes from the sun’s unforgiving rays especially if your light sensitive. Tights/combat khaki trousers; you want to be able to move around maybe jump, climb on rocks, have some fun, do what took you to the game. Have an adventure. You don’t want to be a sloth coz your dress is too tight to move so you miss all the fun. Save the dresses and the official trousers for the office. It’s time to have an adventure so let’s keep it that way.

Sports bra; the ladies will agree with me on this and don’t be shy bras are the most uncomfortable things to have on a busy day. I prefer sports bras. It’s like having on a tight ves that you don’t even know you are wearing. That’s just how comfy sports bras are and I would recommend this for ladies on Safaris.

Pair of protective boots; we all know in the bush there are dangers, thorns, snakes twigs so many things can hurt you in the bush. Having the appropriate shoes for such surroundings will save you a lot of trouble. At least from snakes bites and thorns.

Well, that was it for today on our Lifestyle blog; fashion and travel, try some of these tips and see the difference on your adventures.
